Vietnam, Visitors, etc

Shout Outs: Todd, Nathalie and Family, Ann & Ethan, and Agi/Joe/Bill/Alison. All of these individuals have visited me (in the order they were listed) since my last post. Thanks for visiting! Definitely fun times! Shout out to Barbara and Nicole, too, for letting me join in on their Vietnam trip…thanks!!! (The Vietnam trip was a while ago but I haven’t blogged since the trip). The top shout out honor has to go to the two time defending shout out champion, Jacob Cheriathundam. He signed a free agent contract at the league minimum to come with me on my post HK trip! Jacob will be mentioned again in this blog in an exclusive paragraph.

Vietnam: Vietnam was awesome. I went to Hanoi and Halong Bay. I was offered some shady taxi ride upon my arrival and declined; I had thoughts of the movie taken and opted for a normal looking taxi. The ride from the airport to the hotel reminded me of Kerala… people weaving in and out of traffic, etc. I’d been to so many big cities and expected Hanoi to be similar but it wasn’t. I was a millionaire upon converting my pocket cash. The exchange rate is approximately 1 USD to 20,000 VND (the D in VND doesn’t stand for dollar, either). I think I could retire in Vietnam on my current savings without ever working again (seriously). We did a two day/one night cruise on Halong Bay. It was a lot of fun but the crowd was OK. We met some cool people but they were all families and couples. The Happy Hour was weak. We did meet some swingers (we assume)… now what did I do with that guy’s e-mail… In Hanoi there was this taxi driver that was trying to take us back to the hotel but he gave us a price 10 times the actual amount. So, we told him to go screw himself but he was persistent…following us down the road. I said let’s walk in the opposite direction, he can’t drive in reverse… he did (for a little bit). It was funny. As I said, Vietnam was awesome and I definitely would recommend this trip to all of you.

Visitors: The visitors in 2011 came often with little break in between. I took some days off here and there and definitely saw parts of HK more times than I wanted to as a result of being a tour guide. My coworkers said I’ve seen parts of HK that they haven’t even been too!

Let’s recap highlights from all my visitors:

a) Todd: Todd brought some virus from the U.S. and was sicker than sin. I think I eventually got his sickness but it’s all good (except for getting his sickness part). Anyway, at this one club, he kept using the bar napkins to take care of his running nose and placing it down on the table only to have the workers remove it, bare hands and all, not knowing how the napkin was used. Nasty, I know, but Todd found it entertaining (I did, too). What he didn’t find entertaining was how all the girls I introduced him to thought he had the softest hands ever. I met up with this one local guy at one point during Todd’s visit and Todd said he didn’t understand a word of our conversation because he couldn’t understand the guy’s English; I may not have learned as much Mandarin or Cantonese as I would have liked but I got my Chinenglish down pat. Todd visited shortly after Xmas through New Years. It was a fun time especially the fact that Xmas music was still being played after 1/1/11 and it was driving him nuts; I told him they play it all year round and he believed me. My friends loved Todd, too, and renamed him Toad.

b) Nathalie and Family: Nathalie came with a crew and they stayed in two hotel rooms. The one room had Nathalie, Sobrina, and Eric. The best/funniest part about the trip was the day I crashed at Nathalie hotel room because it made most sense based on the late night and the early morning start. When Denise and Justin, Nat’s cousin and husband who were staying in the other room, came the next morning they were surprised to see me there. I was conveniently on the couch with blankets covering me entirely; they believed be when I told them I was naked under there even though I wasn’t… or was I? It was also the last time I saw Denise and Justin on the trip since they went to Macau with Eric while Nathalie, Sobrina, and I went to the 10,000 Buddhas, which was the first and only time I saw the 10,000 Buddhas. I enjoyed the 10,000 Buddhas and I think it’s similar to the Big Buddha but a lot faster and easier to get to.

c) Ann & Ethan: Spending that much time with Ann and I’m lucky she only got annoyed at me once but there’s an asterisk to that; she was staying at my place when she got annoyed and since I offered my huge luxury apartment to her, I think I was entitled to annoy her. It was funny. Ethan and I enjoyed a lot of jokes that seemed to go over Ann’s head like when the woman at the market saw me and Ethan laughing at the Superman underwear and she told us they had different sizes. The three of us watched the Super Bowl together, which was a lot of fun at 7:30am local time on Monday (seriously) and I went to Tai O for the first time with them. It was definitely fun to hang out with them and I’m glad they visited.

d) Agi/Joe/Bill/Alison: Agi had a week off from his residency and finally decided to party with me outside of the U.S. after years of me trying to convince him to do so. Joe came along as a last hurrah (I think he should, by now, make sure people know why it was his last hurrah). Bill came along with his wife Alison, who was in Shenzen for work; I didn’t get to see Alison with the exception of a few minutes but Bill was an excellent addition to the party. I guess there’s a reason they say you should save the best for last because in spite of the cold I was fighting off and the horrendous weather they got, hanging out with these guys was a lot of fun and a riot. Agi was largely responsible for our entertainment and I thank you for adding to my “top 5” life stories that I will tell my kids some day (I’ll definitely tell your kids… haha).

Jacob Cheriathundam: The man has earned a section all to himself. The AP just ranked him # 1 in the DC/MD/VA area but he is not the unanimous, unfortunately, in the coach’s poll since people like George, Marina, Saugat, etc, all vote for themselves. George, Marina, and my sisters would contest the AP ranking… that is if they actually read this blog. Suckers. Simple corporate logic will show you why Jacob is # 1:

a) It’s not what you know, it’s who you know: Jacob knows this hottie, whose name phonetically sounds like “Porn,” who is hot (I mentioned that already), and she digs Indian guys (like me).

b) Perception is reality: He talks a big game but he backs it up. He’s active in his communication via e-mail and social media. He even took care of one of my CA friends who moved to DC without a friend in site. What is Jacob really doing? What is anybody really doing? Nobody knows… that’s why perception is what counts and my perception of Jacob is that he’s the AP # 1.

c) What have you done for me lately: Not only did Jacob show great support to EYS, which wasn’t necessary but very much appreciated, he is coming along with me for a 2 week Intra Asia trip that will cover HK, Singapore, Cambodia, and Thailand. I wasn’t too keen on traveling solo but I was prepared. Jacob came to the rescue in the last second, just like the Peruvians in “The Onion” movie.

If I had a # 1 traveling buddy draft pick, Jacob would be in discussion with the likes of Tony Chikas and Agi. It’s clear that Jacob will be a first ballot Hall of Famer someday (general HOF, not just traveling buddy HOF… so long as he doesn’t pull a Big Ben or something). Right now, I’m glad he’s coming along for the ride and I think this trip will be that much better with him than without him. Thanks for coming, man!

Annual Dinner: I’m not sure how much I can share without getting fired; perhaps I have already shared too much. At any rate, it was a fun night, with a lot of good friends, which ended with my head hitting the pillow at around 5:30am.

Jet Lagged: Late nights are common in HK and they just sneak up on ya. I’ve had more nights end in the 5-6am ish range than I would have ever imagined. I think the total # of late nights here in HK may be greater than the total before and after HK; time will tell, I suppose. It’s worth noting that one of the late nights I was offered breast milk… It seemed like it was a hybrid between a joke and being serious… and I don’t even think she was pregnant. I labeled this section “jet lagged” because after long nights, I feel like I’m jet lagged in my own town… unable to sleep at the right time, wanting to sleep at the wrong time, etc.

Chinese New Year: I’ve been really lucky to have come to China during the window of time that I did. Being here for CNY was awesome. I even got a few “red pockets,” even though I feel that I didn’t deserve them seeing as that I’m a foreigner. I do appreciate it, though, and I embrace the culture as much as I can.

The 2nd Coming: After this post, I think I may only have one or two more posts in me before taking an indefinite hiatus. The next one or two posts will likely emanate from the U.S. After 52 long months… after traveling all over the world… I will once again call myself a resident of the greatest place of em all… New York. Which means I’m finally coming back home. I can’t wait to have some Friendly’s ice cream (yes, this is worth noting). I hope the 2nd time around is as good as my 1st run in NY; hopefully it’s even better.

Post Hong Kong Trip...

I know I have yet to blog about Vietnam, my visitors, etc, but this is a hotter topic right now. Hopefully I’ll post about the former in a week or so. Below is a first draft of an itinerary I e-mailed to two friends that are considering joining me on my post HK trip. There is no commitment yet and I’m in search of friends who may be interested in case these two friends (from D.C.) bow out. This itinerary can easily work for yous guys that are from NY and CA, too. This trip is right around the corner, so if any of you are interested, let me know soon! I hope I have some travel buddies… first 2-3 to book tickets win!

1) Flight from NY to HK to NY:

- Nonstop
- Departing on Saturday, 2/26 and arriving on Sunday, 2/27
- Returning on Sunday, 3/13 (departs at 5:25pm and arrives in NY at 9:15pm)
- Approximately $1,100*

*Note: I believe NY will be cheaper. I did not see any direct flights from the DC area.

2) Hong Kong: Monday, 2/28 - Wednesday, 3/3

- I got this
- As far as accommodations go, I may be able to work something out so ya'll can live for free.
- no visa required/your passport must not expire within six months of traveling (i.e. six months clear is required)

3) Singapore: QB Matt Thomas calls an audible at the line after seeing the Defense...

- Flight from HK to Singapore departs at 11:05am, 3/3 and arrives at 2:50pm. = $126**
- no visa required/your passport must not expire within six months of traveling (i.e. six months clear is required)
- Hotel near the airport $129 (on expedia) per night but since we're staying for a few days and I need to do some more research, we can change this. (3 nights = $129 total per person)
- Plan: tbd

**Note: I am adding Singapore in because it has a favorable multi-destination flight from HK to Singapore to Cambodia. The flight total from HK to Singapore to Cambodia is $252, so I just divided it in half to put it in context. I have spent some time trying to make sense of all of this and make it work comfortably, efficiently, and economically...so, I think Laos will be substituted with Singapore instead. So, I have no Singapore content yet because I just made this change (like..now) but I know people who know things and Singapore should be easy since it isn't big. I'm not sure if we can venture into Indonesia, since it's so close, but that would be cool.

4) Cambodia: Sunday, 3/6 - Tuesday, 3/8

- Flight from Singapore to Cambodia on Sunday, 3/6 at 6:00am and arriving in Cambodia at 7:05am = $126** (** explained in note "**" above)
- Hotel: http://bloomguesthouse.com/ .... recommended by a friend and the owner is involved with altruistic activities that I support and the 16 reviews on trip advisor are all good. No more than $30/night (for a shared room). (2 nights = $20 total per person; or we can even get our own rooms and it would be $40 total per person).
- VISA REQUIRED; 6 months clear, two passport sized photos, and the proper documentation. My friends sent me this site: http://www.mfaic.gov.kh/ ... I believe this is how they applied for the visa. In briefly checking the site out, it seems like a place where we can apply for our visa.
- Plan: Siem Reap... there are amazing temples here. This is a summary from a friend:

"Ankor Wat is cool. We did it by tuk-tuk which wasn't that expensive and they drive you to a bunch of the temples and act as a sort of guide. Besides Ankor Wat definitely check out Ankor Thom (which is the one where tomb raider was filmed - if i have the name right). Its gorgeous. If you can do it, get to Ankor Wat for sunrise. You can also do the temples by bike, they're about 20/30 min by tuk tuk out of Siem Reap center, probably an hour bike ride or so. It does get mega hot tho, so hydrate A LOT. "

5) Thailand: Tuesday 3/8 - Sunday 3/13

- Flight from Cambodia to Thailand on Tuesday, 3/8 at 2:25 pm arriving in Bangkok at 3:20pm = $229
- Flight from Bangkok to Phuket*** on Wed, 3/9 at 4:55pm arriving in Phuket at 6:10 pm and returning on Fri, 3/11 at 12:50 pm arriving in Bangkok at 2:10pm. = $83 RT
- Flight from Bangkok to Hong Kong on Sunday, 3/13 at 6:30am (all night of partying and straight to a flight anyone?) and arriving in HK at 10:15am (plenty of time to catch the 5:25pm flight) = $124
- Hotels: In some preliminary searches, I don't think it will cost more than $150/night = (5 nights = no more than $250 total per person; I think we can get lower, though).
- Plan: I have some recommendations from some friends and I think it will be easy to get around these two big cities.

*** Note: I hear Phuket is super touristy and maybe not as cool/nice as some of the other islands but it's big and easy to get to and from.

6) Summary:

- The budget you guys gave me was $3,000. The above sums up to about $2,200. So, we would have about $800 to play with for food, taxis, gifts, etc.
- I still think there could be room for savings with some of the hotel options discussed above depending on location, trip advisor ratings, etc
- I suppose in all places we should be careful about getting ripped off; ya never know.
- The most planning and thought should go into Cambodia since I'm not sure how big Siem Reap is and how well people speak English there. HK, Singapore, and Thailand have a huge western influence.
- I apologize for any mistakes, typos, etc. It's about 2am on Sun morning in HK and I spent at least 3 hours on this.

So, who's coming with me?!

Hong Kong - December 2010

Shout Outs: I want to shout out to my cousin, Lucy. She asked if she could get a shout out that she didn’t have to pay for since she felt she paid for the last one (re: EYS); so, here it is. The truth is, however, you’re getting this shout out because you paid for the last one. So, you indirectly paid for this one, sort of like that lunch you bought me (indirectly on the lunch because you can cash that $7 check I sent you…actually… can you wait for my paycheck to hit?…haha). Well, how’s that for a shout out? I just bored everyone who has no idea what I just wrote (except you, Lucy). Blog readers, such as yourself, may be able to get a shout out just by asking (you most likely have to pay for one, though).

Additional Shout Outs: Agi, who said he’s 100% coming to Hong Kong. We can relive such stories like: “the washer and dryer”, “you’re a vegetarian?!”, and “the phone call.” Hopefully we can add to our funny collection of stories.

Elevators: I’m just going to get this out of the way now. I know this is the third consecutive post where I’ve discussed elevators, escalators, people movers, etc, but I need to mention one more thing. I was in the elevator in my fancy office building when a coworker pressed the wrong floor #. Then he kept pressing it and it magically disappeared! I was like wtf?! (“Translate Espanol, No Way Jose” ~ Kanye) He said there was a floor cancellation trick. I’ve never seen anything like this before and I didn’t know such elevators existed. Genius, really; it was awesome. The only thing not awesome about it is the fact that you can’t trick someone into getting into an elevator that has all the buttons pushed and forcing said person to stop at every floor. Know what I mean? Whatever, it’s all awesome.

MTR/Subway: The people who commute to work via public transportation (myself excluded) are coo coo for cocoa puffs (see the last blog post for a definition). Road rage has its rival. People run…leaving the train. For what? Do they really want to get to work that bad? It’s like a horse race and when the doors open, they’re off. Once they clear the stairs, they walk normally as if they didn’t just have a few wires loose. I could go on about this but I think ya’ll get the point

Clothes: You know why clothes are so cheap here? It’s because everything you eat can permanently stain your clothes. I’ve lost one shirt. Good thing it was just a generic blue work shirt. I thought I lost another one (that I recently purchased) but just like Mariano Rivera, I made the save.

Shaving: I suck at shaving. Mostly I have issues with my sideburns. Anyways… my new place doesn’t have a mirror in front of my sink, it has one in the shower. My first and only time shaving under these conditions resulted in cut…on my thumb. Don’t ask.

People Watching: I love people watching. One day I was waiting to meet some friends for a drink so, naturally, I started to people watch. I saw these two people. They looked like coworkers. They looked like they just got off work. They may have been drunk. They started to mess around some but stopped before a friend returned. I wonder what their story was. My friend shows up and says we should grab a drink (originally we were going to just get dinner). It turns out he knew the people I was people watching. I had a semi-serious conversation with the girl before she told me she had to take the pickle out of her drink because she didn’t like it in her mouth (there was a pickle or cucumber in her drink). She said it so seriously and then I was like, “Did you really just say that?” The other dude? He was trashed and kept buying me and my friends (yeah, more friends showed up) drinks. When he left for a minute, some other dude ordered two rounds on his card. At some point my friend and I saw those dudes in an argument, so we decided to…uhh…disappear. Haha. We attempted to say bye first but they didn’t hear us. We randomly bumped into one of the dudes later but he was still smashed, so it was all good.

Theory of Relativity: I’m not sure if the following quotes are legit but they were online (Urban Dictionary), so it works for me:

"Put your hand on a hot stove for two seconds and it seems like two hours. Sit with a beautiful girl for two hours and it seems like two minutes. That's relativity." - Albert Einstein

"When a girl says she needs two minutes to get ready, that's the same thing as when a guy says there's two minutes left in the football game. That's relativity." - Johnny Damon

I was on the mtr one day and this girl with massive tatties (Thanks Aziz) sat down next to me. She was more than happy to show em off. I saw em and that’s it. There wasn’t much I could because she sat down next to me and it’s not like I was going to do anything (or was I?). So, all I could was look around (everywhere but there). This one dude gets on the train and stands right in front of us. This dude shouldn’t play poker because while I did everything in my power not to look at them, all he did was look at them. Now, why did I bring up relativity? Well, the girls here, relatively speaking, lack those kinds of curves. Now this girl would have still done well, relatively speaking, in the U.S. too. She makes Anne Volz (aka Captain Cleave) look like an A cup (haha). Anyways, the dude was tripping. He was sweating buckets as if he just ate buffalo wings. If he’s jones’n so badly he should just go to Wan Chai.

Self Disclosure: Do people self disclose too much or not enough? Well, I’ve met a few people who have no qualms about what they share (and I ain’t saying it’s a good thing or a bad thing…I’m just saying…)

Case 1 – Drinks at a bar

Person 1: Is that my drink?

Person 2: No, I’m drinking diet

Person 1: It looks like cranberry

Me (to Person 2): Well, you’d be able to taste the difference

Person 1: Well, I’m stoned, so it al tastes the same to me

Me: Oh, that’s awesome.

Case 2 – Drinks at a friend’s apartment (on the rooftop)

Me (talking to someone I just met and had been talking to for bit): What’s that?

New Girl: It’s a box for my cigars

Me: You smoke cigars? (I was puzzled. Plenty of people smoke cigarettes recreationally but cigars? Also, I think of smoking cigars as a guy thing. I can’t think of any women I know who smoke cigars…for any reason… we’ll leave the dirty jokes and Uncle Koolaid out of this for now… [and please don’t ask me about my Uncle Koolaid…])

New Girl: Yeah. I only smoke cigars…and pot

New Girl: I have a drug test for work. Good think my dealer isn’t in town, because I would have gotten some coke.

We went on to discuss the drug test. We discussed ways she might be able to pass the test. I wonder how it went.

Later on that night…

Me: I need to hit the ATM before we go to DI

New Girl: I can loan you some money

Me: Do I have to pay you back in cash? (This can be interpreted in a # of ways)

Flirting: Person 1 (see above) told me that when locals tell you to take care, take rest, or to dress warmly that it’s a form of flirting. I don’t buy it but if it’s true, I have a lot of guys and girls of all ages flirting with me on a daily basis.

Random: I went to this secret bar with some friends. The bar doesn’t even have a name. This one guy knew about it and took us there. It was hidden within the wet markets. Pizza Hut is considered fine dining; I think once upon a time it was fine dining in the U.S., too. One time I walked up these stairs to get to a road but it dead ended at a wall; so, I hopped the wall. I measured a piece of paper in my office and it wasn’t 8.5X11 like it should have been. You guys ever see that bit with Jimmy Fallon and JT rapping? Well, one rap they do is Missy Elliot. It was stuck in my head; so, when Manu (PST) asked me what time it was in HK I wrote: “Is it worth it, let me work it, you take your time add four hours and, reverse it.” I thought it was funny. I think he did too.

Holiday Party: Karaoke + Buffet + Alcohol = Good Times. I was the designated walker/thinker, so I didn’t drink too much. Plus, it was a school night (work night). As well documented, I’ve lost weight this year but at least two of my coworkers were surprised with how much food I was able to consume. I guess I’m American after all. This one Senior VP is a Jewish dude from Staten Island (and one of the two coworkers mentioned above). He’s lived in HK for a while now. He can speak…and sing perfect Cantonese. He can even read a bit. Amazing. The party even included Johnny Walker but I passed; there’s no way I would have “kept walking” had I started pounding Johnny (wait, that doesn’t sound right… I could add to this joke but I won’t). I did get the hot hand in a dice game against one of my coworkers but I was the one who kept sipping beer win or lose and that’s not how it’s suppose to work.

Trips: I’m going to Vietnam today.

2010 Awards: I thought about handing out 2010 Awards. You know…nominations…winners…etc. F--k it.

Lastly: This one dude that I’m cool with at work was sick. Before leaving the office, he put his hand out. I shook it knowing damn well he was sick and that I wouldn’t get to immediately wash my hands. Thanks to my impressive mind over matter skills, I didn’t get sick. I haven’t had a poll in a while, so my new poll wonders what ya’ll would do in the same situation.

Happy Holidays and New Year!

Game…Blouses…
